Nammi 01: A New Budget-Friendly EV Choice At 2024 Beginning

Meet the Nammi 01: A budget-friendly electric car with an impressive drive. Explore what sets it apart in the EV market.

Introduction

In recent years, entry-level pure electric cars have become a new focus for major automotive brands. Subsequently, popular models like the BYD Dolphin, Seagull, Wuling Bingguo, and Changan Lumin have emerged. Established automaker Dongfeng wasn’t going to be left behind. In August 2023, Dongfeng introduced its new electric vehicle brand – Nammi, and with it, the debut model Nammi 01.

Competitive Pricing

As a small electric car, the Nammi 01 boasts dimensions larger than the BYD Seagull and Wuling Bingguo, approaching the size of the BYD Dolphin. It offers two versions with CLTC range – 330km and 430km, all at a starting price of just $12,100 to $16,500. Not only is the top-tier version nearly $1,000 cheaper than the entry-level Dolphin, but its base model also competes in price with the Seagull. Dongfeng has priced it quite competitively.

Driving Experience

Recently, we had the opportunity to test drive the Nammi 01, and let’s delve into how this budget-friendly small electric car performs.

Surprisingly Good Handling

It’s well known that in the cost structure of electric cars, the battery constitutes a significant portion, especially for entry-level models priced around $10,000. To make affordable small electric cars profitable, automakers often have to cut costs on less critical components. Structurally, the Nammi 01 doesn’t offer any surprising elements; it still adopts the mainstream front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam structure typical of its class. Considering its price and cost constraints, I initially had low expectations for the Nammi 01’s driving experience. However, my perception changed when I actually got behind the wheel.

Comfortable Steering

What impressed me the most about this car is its steering feel. The Nammi 01’s steering is overall comfortable, with light steering wheel damping. Combined with the fact that it takes only about 1.6 turns from the center to lock, driving it in everyday situations is quite effortless. As the steering wheel angle and vehicle speed change, the steering wheel effort of the Nammi 01 also feels comfortable and natural, while still providing some road feel feedback, avoiding the sensation of dullness.

Regenerative Braking

Regarding braking, the Nammi 01 uses floating calipers both front and rear, and its brake pedal is relatively light with linear braking force. So, in congested urban areas, it’s easy to control the following distance. In terms of regenerative braking, this car offers three modes – weak, medium, and strong. Except for the weak mode, the other two modes have noticeable motor engagement. In the strongest regen mode, the car exhibits significant drag when coasting.

As a cost-effective electric car, the Nammi 01’s chassis cannot excel in every aspect. In terms of ride comfort, it doesn’t perform as well as its driving feel. For example, when driving on slightly uneven roads, the Nammi 01’s sensitive suspension and rapid body sway can be attributed to the high-speed compression damping of the shock absorbers. On continuous uneven surfaces, the combination of soft front and hard rear springs, along with significant shock absorber damping, results in quick front-to-rear rocking. For rear passengers, these body movements can be less comfortable. Overall, the Nammi 01’s chassis tuning leans towards a European style, emphasizing driving experience but slightly sacrificing rear-seat comfort.

Power and Performance

As the core component of an electric car, the Nammi 01 is equipped with a ten-in-one electric drive system with the codename ID3-70. Unlike the current mainstream eight-in-one electric drive systems, the ten-in-one electric drive system integrates the PTC controller and Thermal Management Control Unit (TMCU) into a single controller assembly, further reducing the volume and weight of the electric drive system and making it more convenient to arrange. In terms of power, the Nammi 01 lineup features a single-motor front-wheel-drive layout with a maximum power output of 70kW and a peak torque of 160N·m, with a top speed of 140 km/h. Compared to the slightly lower-priced BYD Seagull, the Nammi 01 offers higher motor power, torque, and top speed.

Acceleration

In actual driving, within the 0-60 km/h speed range commonly used in urban areas, this motor efficiently propels the 1312 kg Nammi 01. Even when switching to sport mode, the car feels “peppy” during acceleration and meets the demands of city commuting. However, once the speed exceeds 60 km/h, the car’s acceleration noticeably weakens. If you have several passengers on board, even with the throttle fully pressed, the Nammi 01’s acceleration is still relatively modest. However, this is common for budget-friendly electric cars in this class. It’s worth mentioning that the Nammi 01’s acceleration pedal has relatively long travel and lacks linear control in the initial acceleration stage, which may require some adaptation for first-time drivers.

Battery and Range

The Nammi 01 is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, known for its safety and longevity. The battery pack capacity varies between the two versions, with the 330km range version having a 40.2kWh battery and the 430km range version having a larger 50.2kWh battery. This choice of battery chemistry is interesting, as many budget-friendly electric cars opt for lithium-ion batteries. The LiFePO4 chemistry has a reputation for durability and thermal stability, which bodes well for the Nammi 01’s long-term reliability.

Interior and Features

Spacious Cabin

One of the key selling points of the Nammi 01 is its surprisingly spacious cabin for a small electric car. Thanks to clever design and packaging, the Nammi 01 offers ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. The rear seats can comfortably accommodate two adults, and even three at a push. The driver and front passenger seats are well-bolstered and offer good support, making long journeys more comfortable.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Nammi 01 comes equipped with a modern infotainment system. The center console features a responsive touchscreen display that provides access to various functions, including navigation, music, and smartphone integration. While it’s not the largest screen in its class, it gets the job done and is user-friendly. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, USB ports, and even a smartphone app that allows you to monitor and control certain vehicle functions remotely.

Safety Features

Safety is a priority for Dongfeng, and the Nammi 01 reflects that commitment. It comes standard with a range of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera. These features provide added peace of mind for drivers, especially in busy urban environments.

Conclusion

The Nammi 01 proves to be a compelling budget-friendly electric car option in the market. With competitive pricing, a comfortable driving experience, and respectable power and performance, it’s a solid choice for those looking to make the switch to electric mobility without breaking the bank. Dongfeng’s Nammi brand has made a notable entry into the world of electric vehicles with the Nammi 01.

In summary, the Nammi 01 offers a combination of affordability, practicality, and electric mobility, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious consumers. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, it’s clear that options like the Nammi 01 are helping to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation future.

With its extended range version, spacious interior, and safety features, the Nammi 01 has the potential to meet the needs of a wide range of drivers, from daily commuters to families looking for an affordable electric car. Dongfeng’s foray into the electric vehicle market with the Nammi brand is off to a promising start, and it will be interesting to see how they continue to innovate and expand their offerings in the future.
